    NOTD 2: Infested Spawn System
    aka "hordes and you"
Detail on enemy stats can be found in this thread.
    On Mutations
So, mutations. There is a distinct difference between a mutated unit spawning and a unit being able to undergo a mutation:
    • Each chapter will have a list of mutation upgrades that are active as a result of the chapter/difficulty allowing the base unit to upgrade. These apply to ambient spawns.
    • If a mutated unit is stated to spawn, it spawns as that unit, not as a base unit which then mutates.
    • Tip your waiter.

    Ambients
Ambient spawns are exactly what they sound like – a constant population of enemies around the map. They largely just wander around and are there to get in the team’s way and rack up noise to cause Hordes to spawn. Ambient spawns are not subject to adjustment due to player count, but ARE subject to rating scaling.

    Hordes
Hordes are groups of enemies spawned by Horde Events. Horde Events are triggered either by the players making too much noise (firing guns, setting off explosions, ect) or by missions. They are randomly composed from a pool of units that is determined by chapter and difficulty, meaning that waves are variable and spooky. Well, mostly.

Unlike the original concept, hitting the Noise Threshold just spawns a Horde with no other bells or whistles to speak of, unless there’s already the maximum amount of Hordes in play – in which case the Noise Level is reset to 50% of the difficulty’s Noise Threshold rather than wrapping back around to 0. While this will probably cause a feedback loop or two, it’ll also keep the action going. Noise decays at a rate of 0.5 per second on all difficulties.

Two additional points to the system:
    Riots, aka Mini-hordes
Hitting half of the difficulty's Horde Threshold (100 for Recruit, 75 for Normal, and 50 for Nightmare) causes Ambient spawns to become more aggressive. Ambient units go back to their standard wander behavior once Noise levels drop below the Riot Threshold.

    Unique Mutations, aka Mini-bosses
Unique Mutations are super tough enemies with various special properties or AI that can spawn at any time. They do not have fixed locations or requirements for their appearances, and mostly exist to make players very sad because they cannot be prepared for, only reacted to. More detail on what Unique Mutations are and how they appear will be given in the second Infested Unit thread.

Hey hey, update to the spawn system in the form of special unit cooldowns to prevent too many special/support enemies from appearing - the adjusted units will likely get balance updates in the not too distant future to make them more threatening and mini-boss like due to their increased scarcity, but that's a ways off. I also need to finish updating the Nightmare spawn pool, but right now I'm a little burnt out so that'll have to wait, I guess.

    Changelog:
    • Special support Infested have gained cooldowns on the master list.
    • Instant Mutation chance for enemies has been changed from 10%/35%/50% to 25%/50%/75% to facilitate more enemy diversity and difficulty.
    • Slashers have had their limitations changed from Per Horde to Per Player. Slashers will be losing their lowered threat rating to balance their higher numbers.
    • Nightmare spawn pools have yet to be updated, but I'll be doing that as soon as I get back from walking my dog. I'm posting now because the weather is bad and I don't wanna lose the updates I've already made.
